Top Twelve Events Of October
It’s October, which means Fall has officially arrived in the Dunes! With cooler weather and less crowds, now’s the time to get out and do some exploring. We’ve found twelve top events that we think you would enjoy – check them out!
1: October 2 – Dig the Dunes Beer Run – Michigan City, IN
Join us for our last Beer Run of the season! We will meet at Burn ‘Em Brewing and then we will head over to Ambler Flatwoods or we will run Tryon Farm (TBD once we see status of trail). Afterwards enjoy a beer and some food.
We will have t-shirt giveaways at this event! You can purchase your tickets in advance here or bring $7 cash to the event.
2: October 4-6 Outdoor Adventure Festival – Porter, IN
Spend the weekend outdoors at the Indiana Dunes Outdoor Adventure Festival, which takes place Friday-Sunday, October 4-6, 2019. Packed with a multitude of outdoor adventures, the festival brings together over 70 events in one weekend.
Registration for the festival is required using the website www.dunesoutdoorfestival.com. Many events have limited spaces and will fill up quickly, so registration before the festival weekend is highly recommended. There is a $10 festival fee per adult (age 18 and over) and is good for all three days. Children 17 and under are free.
The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is located at 1215 North State Road 49, about one mile north of Interstate 94. Dig the Dunes will have a table there on Saturday!
3: October 6 – Beach Glass Wire Wrapping: Jewelry Sets – Valparaiso, IN
Dig the Dunes and Treasures by the Tide are putting on another beach glass wire wrapping class! Join Angie & Danielle as they help you create your very own necklace and earring set! All beach glass is authentic Lake Michigan glass.
Your ticket includes all materials, instruction and a glass of wine. Additional food and wine available for purchase. You can purchase your tickets in advance here.
4: October 12 – 9th Annual Porter’s Perfect Pint Festival – Porter, IN
The 9th Annual Porter’s Perfect Pint Festival is held at Hawthorn Park and benefits Porter’s Volunteer Fire Dept. and Parks and Recreation Dept. Lots of tasty brews, great food available for purchase, unique crafts booths and silent auctions!
You must be at least 21 to attend with a valid ID. Tickets must be purchased in advance here. Designated Driver Tickets Available for 15.00 includes free Figure Eight root beer and water!
5: October 12 – 14th Annual New Buffalo Harvest & Wine Festival – New Buffalo, MI
In celebration of the harvest in Southwest Michigan, this one day event boasts award-winning wines from regional vineyards along craft beers and hard-ciders, all under one roof! The festivities go from noon to 9pm (EST) at Lions Beachfront Park, downtown New Buffalo. Come rain or shine, the event is tented so you can come out and stay all day!
$5 Gate Fee, Kids under 12 are Free!
6: October 12 – Haunted Trails and Family Fall Fest – Michigan City, IN
Friendship Botanic Gardens will host a Spooktacular afternoon for families! Kids are invited to wear their Halloween costumes for a night of family-friendly scares set in the winding nature trails of Friendship Botanic Gardens at dusk. Trick or Treat on the Haunted Trails Loop, Face Painting, Crafts/Games, Bonfire, and Up N Smoke will be providing Food and Beverages. Every year it gets better! This is a fundraiser for the Gardens as well.
Tickets Sold at Door Day of Event – CASH ONLY Kids Ages 1-12 $2 each, children 13 & over, and adults – $5 each
7: October 19 – Boo at the Zoo – Michigan City, IN
A safe trick or treating experience for your ghosts and goblins! Area businesses sponsor booths along the decorated zoo paths and hand out candy to the kids. Two trick or treating sessions are available and advance tickets are recommended due to limited supply. Tickets can be purchased in advance here.
Session one: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Trick or Treating ends and zoo closes at 2:00 p.m.)
Session two: 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Trick or Treating ends and zoo closes at 6:00 p.m.)
8: October 19 – Beer, Brats, Bulbs (and Bluegrass!) – Gary, IN
Over 3000 rare, wild, & unusual Bulbs located at the Aquatorium from 10 am-3 pm. $6 Brat Lunches & cold beer from 18th Street Brewery with music by: Colonel Busters 3-Piece Chicken Dinner!
9: October 19 – Barrel Aged Brew Fest – Three Oaks, MI
Brewing for a cause! Journeyman Distillery’s annual Islay’s Barrel fundraiser features barrel-aged beverages from dozens of local breweries, wineries, and mead/cideries in friendly competition for bragging rights and the coveted Golden Barrel trophy.
100% of ticket sales benefit Islay’s Barrel, a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to extend summer enrichment opportunities to Southwest Michigan children. Purchase your tickets in advance here.
10: October 26 – Trick or Trees: Halloween in the Railway Garden – Valparaiso, IN
Kick off this Halloween celebration with an owl presentation and story telling at 11 am. At noon, check out the winner of the Scarecrow Trail competition at the scarecrow ceremony. See the creepy crawlies that the Traveling World of Reptiles has to offer in an educational, but fun presentation at 1 pm. Trick or Treating in the Railway Garden will begin at 3 pm. Costumes encouraged. Complimentary hayrides will also be available.
Admission is $10 per non-member car load and may be purchased in advance here.
11: October 26 – Flame + Flair Halloween Fest – Michigan City, IN
Spooky treats lurk around every corner. Ghouls, ghosts, and a menagerie of monsters creep to the Uptown Arts District® for Michigan City Mainstreet Association‘s (MCMA) Flame + Flair Uptown Halloween Festival. Roam Michigan City’s downtown for a night of trick-or-treating, fire dancing, and haunted halls. Be swept away with family and friends in this fiery inferno of fun and candy!
All spooky happenings are FREE!

12: October 31 – 2020 Calendar Contest Deadline
Submissions Accepted NOW through OCTOBER 31st!!!!!!
1. Photograph must be Dunes inspired. Trails, wild life, beaches, and monuments from NWI & SW Michigan.
2. No selfies please! Nature Only!
3. High resolution photos must be available
4. Include the Month and Location in submission of each photo.
5. You may ONLY submit three photos per person
All ages and skill levels welcome!
