Top 11 Events In March
The sun is setting later each day and signs of green will start to emerge in garden beds everywhere as we transition to spring this month. Mark your calendars because we have found eleven exciting events to help you get out and connect with nature, ride the paddy wagon or take a fun class!
- March 1 – First Friday, Michigan City, IN AND First Friday, Miller-
First Friday is held on the first Friday of the month. You can walk around, have a drink and visit participating shops, galleries and restaurants!
- March 2 – Maple Sugar Time, Chesterton, IN-
Enjoy a taste of spring at Indiana Dunes National Park’s 41st annual Maple Sugar Time festival. The Chellberg Farm will be bustling with maple sugaring activities! One-hour tours start every 20 minutes each day. Learn how American Indians first boiled maple sap into sugar and how early settlers used large iron kettles to make syrup. Then, stand in the warm steam of the sugar shack where sap is still boiled down the way the Chellberg family did it back in the 1930s. Try your hand at drilling a tap hole, lugging heavy sap buckets using an old-fashioned yoke, or just enjoying a free taste of pure maple syrup!
- March 9 – St. Patrick Parade and Paddy Wagon, Michigan City, IN-
Start your day at 1pm in the Uptown Arts District for the St. Patrick parade. Then stick around for the free paddy wagon event that stops at ten different bars! Busses run after the parade (3pm) until 10pm on a continuous loop stopping at Barker Pub, Local Option, St. Joe Club, 4 Stop, Stadium Inn, Knuckleheads, 3 Sheets and McGinnis, Matey’s & Zorn Brewery.
- March 10 – Beer Run Kick Off & Scavenger Hunt, Michigan City, IN-
Who misses our beer runs? We do!!! That’s why we couldn’t wait to get this kick-off party set up. And what better day, then the day we “spring ahead” with daylight savings! Buy your tickets in advance here and save $5 or pay $25 at the door. We will run/ walk approximately three miles around the Michigan City Lakefront Area. There will be a scavenger hunt along the way, prizes for the winners, lunch and beer at the end!
- March 14 – Faux Stained Glass Class at Quaker Steak, Portage, IN-
Create your very own faux stained glass lantern! You will be using an 11” tall white metal lantern. Draw over a pattern with liquid leading to complete the flowing wave design on each plane of glass. Then fill in the sections with colors of your choice. Once dried you can slide the colored glass back into your lantern. Add a candle and watch as the colors illuminate from inside, and onto your walls. This is a 21 and over venue. Class includes all materials, instruction and one drink. Purchase your tickets here.
- March 16 – Corkscrew and Brew, Chesterton IN-
Set in Chesterton’s beautiful Thomas Centennial Park, the Fourth Annual Corkscrew & Brew will gather local wineries and breweries for this springtime, tasting. There will be food available for purchase as well as music to be enjoyed by all. This event is a fundraiser for the Duneland Chamber of Commerce and Thomas Centennial Park. Join Dig the Dunes as we team up with Troybuilt Fitness and Arcadia for a fun night of fitness and food. Start the night with a “BuiltCamp” class and finish it off with a delicious dinner at Arcadia in Michigan City. More information and tickets are available here.
- March 21 – Beach Glass Jewelry, Hammond, IN-
Join Dig the Dunes and Treasures by the Tide at Byway Brewing in Hammond for a beach glass jewelry class! Create your own beach glass/wire wrapped earrings and necklace. Each piece is unique and your very own! All beach glass is authentic and straight from Lake Michigan. Class includes materials for one necklace, a set of earrings, instruction, and one beer or glass of wine. Purchase your tickets here.
- March 24 – All Ages Drag Brunch, Michigan City, IN-
Please join Welcome to the Other Side at Fiddlehead as they host an ALL AGES drag brunch. All proceeds go to PFLAG and PRIDE Fest 2019. Because of the overwhelming response there will be two seating for this very popular show. The first seating will be at 11 am and the second will be at 2pm. - March 30 – Wake Up The Gardens, Michigan City, IN-
The gardens have scheduled their ANNUAL ‘Wake Up The Gardens’ Spring Clean Up Day for Saturday March 30th from 10am-2pm and are seeking volunteers to assist with our Spring Cleanup. They are primarily volunteer based and rely on volunteers to help them get prepared for the 2019 Season! You will be raking, picking up garbage, picking up sticks, hauling leaves etc. It isn’t glamorous work, but it is necessary work! Please bring your own garden gloves. Please bring a rake also if you are able to. Light refreshments will be provided (water, cookies). Dress for the weather! The event will occur rain or shine! - March 30 – Badass Women of the Dunes, Chesterton, IN-
Hop on the Badass Bus and learn about the legacies of women who made history but might not be talked about in history books! We will explore, hike, and discuss the places in or near the park that shaped the lives of these influential women. The bus tour will begin at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center and trek to several others areas inside and outside of the park. Participants will get to enjoy short hikes and explorations of the places these women fought for as we share stories and inspiration. This program is done in partnership with Dunes Learning Center and Save the Dunes. There is a $35 program fee registration. You can register here.
