Team up for “Creekness Stakes” and Race in a Giant Canoe!
There’s something really cool happening the end of September and many of you may not know about it.
Creekness Stakes is a fun, fast paced race down trail creek in a giant wooden canoe. And, it’s all to support Trail Creek Week, which is a high quality environmental education event for Michigan City Area Schools students. The event kicks off around 9am and the racers will head out in heats.
There are several teams already signed up, but they are looking for more! It’s $1,000 to sponsor a boat of 9 people. (Or, approximately $111 per person). Anyone can sign up…Church groups, yoga buddies, mom’s groups, businesses. Don’t have a full boat? No worries, contact Nicole Messacar at firstname.lastname@example.org and she can help you work something out. All equipment is provided, you just need to bring yourself. You can follow the facebook event here.
Not a paddler? They would love it if you came out to cheer. There will be a food truck and music and there is a nice playground at Hansen Park for the kids. Make it a family event!
What is Trail Creek Week? Trail Creek Week is an award-winning place-based environmental education program. It was developed to really immerse students in the importance of Trail Creek and Lake Michigan. It is a 5 day event with 6 groups attending each day. Students attend land-based stations that are staffed by local groups and experts. Once the students rotate through those land-based stations, they board 24 foot Wilderness Inquiry canoes for a paddle on Trail Creek.
