It’s Sunday Funday! What are you doing today?

November 13, 2016

It’s Sunday, the sun is shining, and the weather looks like it will be holding in the fifties. What do you have planned for the day? We thought we’d share a sample itinerary with you and maybe give you some ideas!

First off, you need to relax with some coffee or tea. Whether you hop over to your local coffee shop, like Red Cup, or brew it yourself, a good cup of something warm sets the tone for the day.

Do you have a dog? If so, throw him in the car and take him down to the beach! This time of year, most beaches will allow dogs. Or, there are several dog parks in the area. Dig the Dunes did a blog on all the dog friendly areas, and you can find it right here.

I’m a runner, so a cool sunny day is perfect for a trail run, but if running is not your thing, you can always go for a brisk walk. The main thing is to get outside and get some fresh air. We’ve listed several of our favorite trail runs here as well as some of the best fall hiking trails. We’ve even got some good ones for kids!

After your morning run or walk, you are probably hungry…and maybe thirsty? There are some great local restaurants in the dig the dunes “cool digs” directory. Maybe even some that you haven’t tried yet! A bloody Mary at Bartlett’s is perfect for your Sunday Funday, or how about venturing to Lake Street Eats in Bridgman? It’s just down the street from Warren Dunes State Park (as well as a couple breweries!).

Want to start your holiday shopping? Skip the big box stores and stroll through some of our local shops. The uptown arts district in Michigan City or Lake Street in Miller has lots of cute places, as well as downtown Chesterton and Three Oaks. We have close to 15 listed right here.  Or, if you are ready to head back inside, browse the Dig the Dunes shop, where we now have shirts, hoodies, calendars, decals, jewelry, photo prints and pottery!

The sun sets early this time of year, so it’s time to head south to Jasper Pulaski! The sandhill cranes are out in full force at this time of year (thousands!) and this really is a must see for anyone in the area.  Bob Strempka took some beautiful photos of them last year. Plan to be there right before sunset, and you will truly be “wowed”.

So how does that sound? Are you tired yet? I am! Now it’s time to reflect on your day. Hopefully you explored some new territory, saw something beautiful, laughed with friends or just smiled while taking a walk along the shore by yourself. Whatever you do…take this sunday, or even Monday…and make it FUN day!
