Shelf Ice Brewfest – Michigan City
This year’s Shelf Ice Brewfest takes place on February 20, 2016…and it’s going to be bigger and better than last year! Take a peek at what last year’s event was like. This is sure to sell out, so get your tickets soon! Tickets are available here.
(2/2015) Yesterday was the first annual Shelf Ice Brewfest, and I was among one of the 1,000 lucky folks who were able to secure a ticket to this sold out event. It was a beautiful February day — they couldn’t have asked for better. And, when the sun shone down in certain spots it almost felt like spring.
As I walked in, there was a really nice feel to it. Not too crowded, but yet plenty of people. Faint drumming from the Bucket Boys could be heard throughout and everyone just seemed to be in a really good mood. Who wouldn’t be? We were surrounded by craft beer, right?
The event went above and beyond my expectations. Over 25 breweries, many whom I had not heard of — all bringing a wide variety and huge selection of beer. The set up was perfect. Three tents a nice distance apart from each other, each with about 10 breweries. There was never too long of a wait for a beer and usually you could get right in and try something as well as learn a little about what you were drinking from the brewer.
Food was set up in a different section and there was a nice choice. Hungry, Inc food truck, Pines Lounge and Leroy’s to name a few. I had nachos from Leroy’s and a pretzel from Arturo’s while my friends tried the Grilled Cheese from Hungry, Inc and said it was delicious.
Some standouts for me were of course Burn ‘EM brewery. The Burn ‘EM boys know how to do it! They had a huge variety and their corner of the tent was always busy. Greenbush had a few beers that I really enjoyed, and I heard many talking about Stone Brewery out of California, but my all time favorite was Hop Collector from Taxman Brewing Company out of Bargersville, IN. I will definitely have to make a trip down there!
A brief stop at The Pickle & Turnip on my way out was the perfect ending to a really fun day. They were gearing up for an after party with Figure Eight, but by that time I had my fill of beer, so my glass of Malbec and bacon wrapped dates really hit the spot.
Great job to Michigan City Mainstreet Association for putting on this event. They get a big thumbs up from Dig the Dunes. It’s events like this that keep Michigan City alive. Cheers!
