Relax and Refuel while Digging the Dunes.

Looking for more ways to explore our beautiful beachfront while indulging in local food fare? Check out Dig the Dunes Trail Stop at Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk where cold brews and a pizza can replenish your belly after a hike on the trails rejuvenates your soul.
If you don’t know the way there, it can get a bit befuddling. From US -12 West from Michigan City and Chesterton (East from Ogden Dunes and Miller Beach), get on HWY 249 to Midwest Steel Road. There is signage. Don’t be daunted when it looks like you are going to a restricted access area. There is a sharp left turn that will keep you out of handcuffs and headed to the expansive lakefront views where Dunes Trail Stop proprietor Eve Wierzbicki is ready to uncork a bottle of Ah-ha! once you arrive.
Portage Lakefront & Riverwalk offers a cool stroll to a beacon light on Lake Michigan and stunning views of the Chicago skyline. Plan your adventure in early evening to catch the sunset while enjoying some of the local eats at Dig the Dunes Trail Stop, which include, on a rotating basis, JJ’s pizza, Valpo Velvet ice cream bars, Moe’s stunning hummus (I can vouch!), and local beers and wines as well as soft drinks and other snacks. Expect unique offerings all summer. Be sure to follow their facebook and instagram to see what’s happening each week. (like Run the Riverwalk every Thursday from 5-8pm, weather permitting). Trail Stop is currently open Wednesdays and Thursdays 3 – sunset, Fridays 2 – sunset, and 11 – sunset on weekends. The patio area offers open space for social distancing, and there’s enough beach to wet your toes while wetting your whistle.
