What brought you to the dunes? After living in the city I came back here to enjoy the summer and regroup. I thought it was just a temporary move, but like a lot of people I liked the pace of life here and stayed.

How long have you lived here? I’ve had a connection to the area most of my life. I’d spend summers in Michiana as a kid. A short time later my parents moves us here full time. I moved back here about 12 years ago.

What is your favorite thing to do in the area? When I was younger it was going to the beach. I would be there most days in the summer. Now hiking is my favorite thing. I hike year round; sun, rain or snow.

Tell us a secret about the dunes. This sounds weird, given the audience, but I think the dunes themselves are the biggest secret. They seem so underutilized. On one hand I enjoy the seclusion and privacy of the dunes, but on the other, I’m blown away at how few people seem to be out there on any given day.

Give us your top three “hidden treasures” (restaurant, shop, trail, beach, event…really anything!) A top three is too hard! Seriously, for me the biggest hidden treasures are the groups of people and small business owners that are involved and invested in the area. I try to support as many local business as possible, especially those creating community around health. It’s fun to make recommendations around short term treats like the soft serve from the Marathon Station(Beverly Shores) or savory muffins at Nani’s (Union Pier). What I think is really great, is when when I know I can get a fresh smoothie at Nature’s Cupboard (Michigan City) and The Quality Beet (Michigan City) or that I can take an exercise class at TroyBuilt (Michigan City), or Equilibrium (New Buffalo) and that I can be in instant community through a yoga class at Sacred Dunes (Michigan City, Dancing Feet (NewBuffalo) or Skybird Yoga (Sawyer). It’s hidden treasures like these that make living here sustainable, and I’m glad to play a part in that.

What would you like to teach people about the dunes? The best thing about the dunes for me is that it can really have a restorative effect. One day you might be feeling drained; go for a hike and you come out feeling energized. If you feel anxious you come out feeling more grounded. You always seem to get what you need. It’s more than just a feeling I have; more and more research is emerging everyday on the importance of our connection to nature. I’m not always motivated to go, but I never regret a hike and it’s such a good feeling after a day in the dunes.
