Meet your Neighbors: Christy Qualkenbush

Meet Christy Qualkenbush! Christy is the General manager for Beachwalk Vacation Rentals located at Stop 7 in Michigan City.  She is lucky to spend much of her time near the shores of Lake Michigan.

What brought you to the dunes? My parents relocated our family here from Niles, Michigan.

How long have you lived here? Since I was 3. I grew up in Michigan City/Trail Creek and was lucky to enjoy my weekends as a child with my friends and family on the beach. We often went boating, tubing, loungeing on the lakeshore building sandcastles or fishing.

What is your favorite thing to do in the area? I could never pick a favorite as each season brings a new set of adventures. Ice skating, riding bikes, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, campfires, festivals, boat races, the list is endless!

Tell us a secret about the dunes? I get to spend a lot of my time at one of the areas best kept secrets of all time…Beachwalk Resort in Michigan City. I enjoy the feeling of vacation that you get from the area.

Give us your top three “hidden treasures” (restaurant, shop, trail, beach, event…really anything!)

a) Shops in the arts district like Urban Soles and Nest Number 4 are great places to find unique gifts and the owners are so amazing, they make you feel like a friend, not a customer each time you enter their store. I think this is a unique shopping experience many people fail to take the time to experience. My family and I enjoy walking through the arts district and window shopping, scoping out the old buildings and guessing how old they are!

b) Stop 50 wood fire pizza has the best pizza.

c) Beachwalk Resort, a colorful community with candy colored houses and white picket fences.

What would you like to teach people about the dunes? The power plant NIPSCO is NOT a nuclear power plant, it is a cooling tower. I always tell kids it is our local cloud maker.

Anything else? I would like to introduce to the many families in nearby cities such as Chicago and Indianapolis the escape that lies so close to them, Beachwalk Resort. Located at Stop 7 off Lake Shore Drive in Michigan City, Beachwalk Resort offers a chance for families to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and to reconnect.
