Celebrate the Monarch’s Migration with Music and Food this September

Join Save the Dunes on Sunday, September 15 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM as they celebrate the journey and migration of the monarch butterfly through our region with music and food at Michigan City’s Brewery Lodge & Supper Club. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Save the Dunes’ work to protect and advocate for the Indiana dunes, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding natural areas for the health and vitality of the environment and the people who live, work, and recreate in Northwest Indiana. This includes efforts to protect hard-working pollinators such as the monarch butterfly.

Attendees this year will enjoy music by a local acoustic musician and Chicken Dolphin. Monarch Music Fest tickets start at $50 online and $60 at the door. Tickets are available until the event reaches capacity (300 people limit).

“We are excited to partner with the Brewery Lodge to host our Monarch Music Fest once again,” says Betsy Maher, Executive Director of Save the Dunes. “This is one of my favorite events of the year where our members and supporters join us for an afternoon of music, games, and fun for the whole family.

The name ‘Monarch Music Fest’ pays tribute to monarch butterflies who begin their long journey to overwinter in Mexico in September. New generations of this species return north in the summer to reproduce and lay eggs. Monarch butterflies have been in steep decline across the US the past 20 years and the problem has only accelerated in recent years. Save the Dunes works to build and protect pollinator habitat across Northwest Indiana. In 2019, Save the Dunes joined forces with the Indiana Dunes National Park, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, and the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) with funds from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative to improve up to 367 acres per year and protect pollinators by planting native plant species and removing invasive species.

“Through community engagement, we also encourage individuals and businesses to plant native plants on their properties to increase connectivity in the region.” says Maher.

In 2022, Save the Dunes received the Merit Award from the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for their Living in the Dunes, Volume II: A Homeowners Guide to Pollinator Garden Landscaping in Indiana’s Coastal Communities. Guides and other resources on how to landscape with native plants will be available at Monarch Music Fest.

This year’s event features a taco bar, beer & wine, 2 bands, a silent auction, and yard games to make Monarch Music Fest a fun family friendly day.

Tickets can be purchased at www.savedunes.org under the events tab. Each ticket includes entrance to the Mexican Fiesta, taco bar, and 1 drink ticket. Beer, wine, and cocktails for an additional cost will be available on-site. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Special thanks to the Brewery Lodge & Supper Club, Zorn Brewery, Dig the Dunes, and our many sponsors for making this event possible. Be sure to get your tickets today!
