2025 52 Week Challenge

Want to get out and do something fun every week? Then do the Dig the Dunes 52 week challenge! We'd love to see pictures and new places that you find. The perfect place to share your fun is in the Dig the Dunes 52 Week Challenge group. (And guess what? Joining it is the first challenge.) All other challenges can be done in any order, at any time.




  1. _____Join the Dig the Dunes facebook 52 week challenge group. (easy!)

  2. _____ Do the Diana Dunes Dare at West Beach.

  3. _____ Find a Shirley Heinze preserve and take at least 3 photos on your hike.

  4. _____ Do the Three Dune Challenge at the State Park.

  5. _____ Head to the Calumet Dunes Trail off highway 12 and run the paved .5 mile trail. Not a runner? Give it a try -- or a simple walk will do!

  6. _____ Hit Bailly Homestead, Chellberg Farm, Little Calumet River Trail AND the Mnoké Prairie trails all in one day. 

  7. _____ Take photos of Shelf Ice. Do NOT go out on the ice.

  8. _____ Visit the Heron Rookery Trail in the spring.

  9. _____ Check out Miller Woods (Paul H. Douglas) when the Lupine are in bloom.

  10. _____ Walk at least 2 miles on the beach, and find 3 pieces of beach glass.

  11. _____ Join a ranger led hike at Pinhook Bog. Or do the Upland trail.

  12. _____Join a ranger led hike at Mt. Baldy.

  13. _____Look for birds on the Great Marsh Trail in Beverly Shores.

  14. _____Rent a kayak and go for a paddle. (or use your own).

  15. _____Do the long loop AND the short loop at Tolleston Dunes.

  16. _____Take a photo on the Pine Tree Trail at Ambler Flatwoods.

  17. _____Jump in Lake Michigan.

  18. _____Hike one trail in the morning and a different one in the evening.

  19. _____Walk the pier to the Michigan City Lighthouse.

  20. _____Take a walk through Friendship Botanic Gardens.

  21. _____Walk or run through Sunset Hill County Park.

  22. _____Visit a LaPorte County Park. 

  23. _____Visit the Nature Center at a State Park.

  24. _____Visit the Indiana Dunes Welcome Center, in Chesterton

  25. _____Go to a local restaurant or shop along dunes Hwy 12 and then visit Central Ave. Beach.

  26. _____Join Dig the Dunes for one of their many events.

  27. _____Take a photo of cactus out in the dunes.  Bonus points if it is flowering.

  28. _____Visit the local shops in a town and share your pictures.

  29. _____Discover a new trail, anywhere and share it with everyone.

  30. _____Find a crinoid AND a piece of beach glass on the beach.

  31. _____Go to an event at the State Park that you have not done before.

  32. _____Go to a state park in Indiana you have not been to. 

  33. _____Go to a National Park (other than the Indiana Dunes).

  34. _____Show a friend a trail they haven’t yet discovered.

  35. _____Ride your bike (or rent a bike) and discover somewhere new.

  36. _____Take a photo of the perfect sunset and the perfect sunrise and share.

  37. _____Make a cool design in the sand with beach rocks.

  38. _____Drive north in Michigan and discover a new town.

  39. _____Take a class (art, photography, beach glass workshop).

  40. _____Take the South Shore into Chicago for the day.

  41. _____Go to an Apple Orchard.

  42. _____Do a snowy day activity, x-country ski, snowshoe, sled or have a snowball fight.

  43. _____Visit a Porter County Park.

  44. _____Picnic at a park with a lunch that you made (no store bought food)

  45. _____Do a night Hike.

  46. _____Find a local owned coffee shop and enjoy and share.

  47. _____Find a local owned Ice cream shop and share.

  48. _____Check out Depot Dog on Melton Road.

  49. _____Take a hike at Brincka Cross Gardens, near the Pines, Michigan City.

  50. _____Take a picture of an animal in its natural habit and share.

  51. _____Hike the Hobart Woodland Trail.
