Ryan Gerard - Eyelashcicles (self portrait)

Meet Ryan Gerard, owner of Third Coast Surf Shop in New Buffalo and St. Joseph, Michigan and a great lakes surfer!

What brought you to the dunes?
The water. Growing up in South Bend, we would come up to the beaches often in summer. I later learned to surf on Lake Michigan in 1998, and after living and working in various coastal and mountainous locales out west, returned to the big Lake to open a surf shop.

How long have you lived here?
I’ve lived within a five minute walk to the lake since 2005.

What is your favorite thing to do in the area?
Surfing on a Great Lake seems strange to most people, but there is nothing that brings me more joy (outside family and friends) than surfing in good freshwater waves when all of the elements come together. It’s an incredible high.

Tell us a secret about the dunes.
September is prime time for waves and weather.

Give us your top three “hidden treasures” (restaurant, shop, trail, beach, event…really anything!)
a) Jean Klock Beach in Benton Harbor
b) 18th Street Brewery in Gary
c) Kids’ Beach Camps we offer in New Buffalo & St. Joseph

What would you like to teach people about the dunes?
Not to pollute our water and land. What will be leaving our kids, and their kids?

Anything else?
Thanks to everyone who has supported Third Coast Surf Shop for the last ten years!
