Meet Kris Krouse!  Kris is Executive Director of Shirley Heinze Land Trust, a non-profit organization that has been protecting and restoring natural areas in Northwest Indiana since 1981.  He earned a B.S. in Environmental Science from Saint Joseph’s College and an M.B.A. from Indiana University Northwest. He resides in Valparaiso, Indiana, with his wife, Heidi, and their two children, Jak and Abigail.

What brought you to the dunes?
A childhood friend’s mom brought us to the dunes in 3rd grade.  My professional career would bring me back to the dunes when I accepted the position at Shirley Heinze Land Trust.

How long have you lived here?
I’ve lived with my family in Valparaiso for almost ten years.

What is your favorite thing to do in the area?
Take bike rides with my family and spending time at the beach.

Tell us a secret about the dunes
Sand is the gift that keeps on giving!

Give us your top three “hidden treasures” (restaurant, shop, trail, beach, event…really anything!)

a) Ivanhoe South Nature Preserve located on Colfax Ave. in Gary

b) Ambler Flatwoods located just off Hwy 212 on the east side of Michigan City

c) Greek’s Pizza in Valparaiso

What would you like to teach people about the dunes?
The geologic history of the region including the formation and succession of the dunes.
(Dig the Dunes is hoping to have a blog post about this soon!)

Anything else?
Come out and learn more about a great organization doing some really good stuff throughout the Northwest Indiana dunes region.  You can do so by joining us for ‘Take a Walk with Shirley’ events on May 30, June 6, or June 14.  More details can be found at www.heinzetrust.org.
