A few months ago, I was driving down Calumet Road in Chesterton and noticed a new sign on a building. The letters popped out…L.O.A.F. My curiosity got the best of me and I had to go check it out and see what the acronym stood for. Local. Organic. Affordable. Foods. Last week, I was able to meet with Eve Kaiser, the owner of L.O.A.F. and she explained it to me her vision, how L.O.A.F. got started and what she plans to do in the future.

Eve has always wanted a place for people to go where they could find everything local that they needed all in one place. From food, to bath essentials, to furniture to gifts. She found  herself wandering from store to store trying to find different things she needed for her daily life, and with a growing family, finding those things, that were both organic and local, became a timely thing. She thought if there was a place that had it all, it could make things so much simpler. And so she decided to open L.O.A.F.!

L.O.A.F. opened in July of 2014. Last week, I walked into the store for the first time. Eve’s daughter, Julia was behind a counter chopping vegetables. I asked what she was making, and she explained that they just received a shipment of fresh tomatoes and wanted to make some prepared salads with them. Everything looked delicious and fresh. I was able to sample some cheese, meat and blueberry infused water. Part of Eve’s vision is to start creating more of these prepared foods. In the next year she hopes to offer salads, breads and ready-made meals, maybe even some picnic lunches that one can take with them on a hike or trip to the beach!

Eve mentioned that she had several farmers in mind when she opened L.O.A.F., and since it’s opening, many people have contacted her as well. She knew she wanted to work with Fairstream Farms and Green Housewives, but this has expanded quite a bit in the year that they’ve been open. I noticed a Rolling Stonebaker sign next to the loads of tomatoes in a cooler, so I knew those must be delicious!

LOAF is quite welcoming, with a child’s play area and toys, parents can shop while the kids stay entertained. Customers are welcome to browse, chat and enjoy some refreshments while they shop. Eve invites you all to come in, take a peek, maybe sign up for a salad making class…and make L.O.A.F. you’re one stop shop!

The fresh produce looked delicious!
