Dunes Learning Center Open House to be held this weekend.

January 7, 2016

Looking for something to do this weekend? On Saturday, January 9, the Dunes Learning Center in Porter will be having their annual winter open house. The event will be from 11am – 3pm and will include a fun-filled day of family activities. Dunes Learning Center provides year-round curriculum and standards-based experiential environmental education programs for learners of all ages.

The event is led by the center’s team of naturalists. Activities include guided hikes, nature crafts, games, face painting and live music. There will also be several hands-on education programs.

“This is a great way for the public to explore our Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore campus in winter and experience firsthand the acclaimed programs that are usually only available to visiting classrooms,” said Geof Benson, executive director of Dunes Learning Center. “Our naturalist staff has a knack for inspiring curiosity and making learning fun. We can all benefit from being a kid for a day!”

The Dunes Learning Center is located at 700 Howe Road, Porter, Indiana. There is no cost to attend, but they do ask that you pre-register, as space is limited. For more information and to register, please go to their website,

Event sponsors include ArcelorMittal, BP, Charles M. Chuman, M.D., Indiana Arts Commission, Lakeshore Public Media, NIPSCO and South Shore Arts.

Hot cocoa and cookies will be served.
