The Lake Michigan Catamaran Championship will be held the weekend of June 21st through June 23rd in Michigan City, starting at Washington Park Beach. This is an annual championship event between the Catamaran Association of Michigan and the Catamaran Association of Wisconsin and is co-hosted by the Catamaran Racing Association of Michigan and Hobie Cat Fleet 126 of Michigan City. Over 50 boats will be participating in the event, with competitors hailing from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Canada.

The Catamaran Racing Association of Michigan (CRAM) is a non-profit group of catamaran sailors in it’s 54th season who sponsor 8 to 10 weekend regattas annually. A catamaran is a two-hulled sailboat with sails in the middle. Catamarans are fast, high performance, high tech sailboats that are competitive and fun to sail. Competitors in this event will range from world championship competitors, to new sailors.

Last year’s race was held in New Buffalo, Michigan and race organizer, John Nekus is excited to help bring this event to Michigan City, both this year, and again in June 2020.

“Michigan City is a great place to sail and we are excited to help showcase our wonderful city, both as a tourism destination, and as a beachfront community that supports amateur sporting events. We also hope to help promote Catamaran sailing and racing as a sport in our area.” John’s goal is to make Michigan City a hub of Catamaran racing and is working to bring the Hobie Cat North American Catamaran Championship to Michigan City in September of 2020.

Admission to the Catamaran Championship event is free (although there is an $8 Washington Park admission fee) and races begin at 11am each day in Lake Michigan off the Washington Park Beach, concluding around 3pm. The race course is weather dependent set around bouys, and the finish line will be as close to the beach as possible. Starting at 9am each day, curious catamaran fans can watch the competitors prepare their boats and meet some of the sailors. A hospitality event for Race Participants, Sponsors, friends of CRAM and those interested in learning more will be held from 6:00pm to 8:30pm on Friday evening, June 21st at the Michigan City Yacht Club Pavilion located immediately south of the Bartlett’s Fish Camp in Washington Park. The championship trophy presentation to the fleet winners will be on Sunday, the 23rd at 3pm, at the race headquarters located at the Sunset Grille Pavilion at Washington Park Beach.

If you would like to learn more about Catamaran sailing, or maybe even take a sailing lesson, the Michigan City Yacht Club offers sailing lessons for aspiring sailors of all ages, as well as youth sailing camps and racing lessons. Hobie Cat Fleet 126 is located in Michigan City and will be conducting fleet races during the summer and is another opportunity for learn more for anyone that wants to join the fun. You can find more information about this event and other 2019 Catamaran regattas at the CRAM website .
